The CHAT tonight...

Unfortunately, this was not a good time to CHAT. Next semester I'm going to have students register for the chat times so that we make sure we can have this experience. Thank you to Larry for coming in but somehow we couldn't connect to make it live. I hope your dance program was a big success and I hope I see you on Wednesday at the Awards ceremony for staff. Here's the Chat log. This is a record of everything everyone said. Not much but Melissa posted a long statement. This is possible in a logged chat, however, its better to keep it shorter like you would in a live chat. Chat log Spring 04.doc This log is several pages long, please scroll through to the end.

Bits and pieces

Student: I just had a question on test number 2 number 17 it ask what are the two most common
forms of citations used and the answer was APA and MLA but on the test it would only let
me select one answer even though it specifically said what are the "two most
common...." I just wanted to make sure that I don't get points deducted for that. Thank
you!
Instructor: This software still has some gliches. This is one that I was not able to fix. I will give the grade for one answer because I know everyone has tried to post two but it won't take it.

Discussion grades: In order to receive a grade in your My Stuff you need to cross post in the Submit Assignments. If you have posted in the Discussion area but not in Submit Assignments I will add the grade for the discussion at the end of the semester as additional points. I will be able to do the same for the CHAT, so please log in and post your chat statements. If you can enter the chat area during the live session time you will be able to interact with other students.

Class presentations for last semester can be viewed on the blog in the archives un 12/01/2003-12/31/2003.

Civil Liberties, Intellectual Freedom, and Privacy

Our CHAT date is tomorrow night, Sunday May 16 at 9 PM.

Do some prep work by looking at the American Library Association website. The American Library Association has deep-rooted principles in support of intellectual freedom. As the digital information age has developed many issues have had to be addressed in this new environment. This has brought about increased activity within the ALA Washington Office on legislative and regulatory/administrative proposals related to content controls and intellectual freedom. The primary area of concern has been filtering and the laws that have attempted to mandate federal filtering requirements. The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA); the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA); and the USA PATRIOT ACT of 2001 (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism)are some of the new laws. The USA PATRIOT Act broadly expands law enforcement's surveillance and investigative powers.

Go to our online class and in the Course Menu click Communicate! then click on Live Chat! Read the First Amendment quoted on the WebCT Chat page and below. Then click on Room 4 Intellectual Freedom. This chat dialog is logged and can be read later.

“Congress Shall Make No Law Respecting an Establishment of Religion, or Prohibiting the Free Exercise Thereof; or Abridging the Freedom of Speech, or of the Press; or the Right of the People Peaceably to Assemble, and To Petition the Government for a Redress of Grievances.” —First Amendment. The Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on December 15, 1791

How do you think this right relates to the Internet today, especially to recent laws and debates on Intellectual Freedom on the Internet? Enter the Chat! Click on Room 4 Intellectual Freedom and enter the room to join the on-going chat. If no one is in the room, chat anyway. All statements will go into the log. Type your statements in the dialog box "Enter your message below" and press enter to post live. You will see a list of people in the "room" to the right in the dialog box under "Useloggedged On". If you want to send a hyperlinked URL click that box and enter the URL in the box that opens. Be sure to include the http:// section. Click Quit when you leave. If you click the box for the Entry Chime a bell will ring each time someone enters the chat room.

I hope you will join the class in this Chat Room on Sunday May 16 between 9 PM and 10 PM.

TEST 2 and all that...

Test 2 is open and will close on May 14. I'm sorry that I cannot give extensions or special circumstances for this test so please take it now and submit. Some of you reported having problems accessing the test. Please check again and take the test. If you are still having problems send email right away to my college email address.

Thank you to those of you who came in on Saturday and others on Wednesday evening. I will now have to drop any students who have not submitted more than one or two assignments or taken tests. You will be dropped as of April 29 and will receive a W as a grade.

Please take the End Survey when you have submitted your Research Paper and Presentation. The Research Paper is due now. The Presentation is your FINAL. You can submit it in any of these forms: PowerPoint, web page, or MS Word document. Submit it in the Submit Assignments box for Presentations (it is open now) and I will save and post it on this blog. Check the archives to see last semester's presentations. These are websites to help you if you want to do a PowerPoint presentation or create a simple web page.

OK, this is a joke, but you might want to take it seriously and get all your homework in to me. Avoiding doing work is one of the Seven Deadly Sins! So, go to it! :-)
