New Year, 2005

I wish you all a good year in 2005, one which provides those things you wish for. I hope you make good resolutions and goals to further your studies while taking care of your many responsibilities. And, I wish you much happiness, too.

My concern and condolences go out to those of you who are from those countries effected by the terrible tsunami in South Asia. Many areas in my country of origin, India, have been devastated. Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Somalia, Sumatra and other areas have similar destruction. Our sympathies go out to all. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cresent Societies is doing a massive job and is to be commended. If their website is a bit slow because of the number of hits, Amazon has made it easy to donate with a 1-Click link. This will also take you to a page showing the total collected to date and the number of payments, over 2 million as of today. Another organization, among many, that is helping in South Asia is World Vision International. There is a good news article in Yahoo! with links. I hope that 2005 sees a coming together of the world to aid and rebuild instead of wars.

See you all at the Evergreen Valley College Library next semester!

Grades F04

Unfortunately, WebReg has been down since December 24 and WebCT has been down since December 26 so students cannot get into either one. I was able to post all the grades to WebCT before it went down but I have not been able to upload my grades into the system yet. I hope to be able to do that on January 3 so that you can receive an official copy of your grades in time. Meanwhile, I am posting these on this blog. Grades F 04 grades only W.htm and for a full in depth look at the whole semester see Grades F 04 Correct Final for Blog.xls These can be opened and saved in XL. The WebMail seems to be working so you can send me email via my college email address.

PRESENTATIONS

I am really excited about the Presentations this year. They are above and beyond students of previous years. Interesting topics, too. I am posting them here but not the grades. I will have to post my final grades on December 26th because our district servers are going to be down until January 2nd or later and I don't want to risk making the January 4 deadline. Check this blog, too, as I will post the final grades here with only your last 4 digits of your SS# or your student #. Please open and click F5 or View and then Slide Show to see the ppt. presentations.

Research Steps and Outline

Some of you seem to be having trouble with these concepts. You already have your Research Topic, agreed to by me, either by email or in Assignment 8. Read A Short Guide to Library Research under Lectures in our WebCT course. Assignment 9 is Write down the steps you will be taking to do your research for your Research Paper. Include websites, books and magazine databases you will be using. Some of you are forgetting to go the Library website and find books and magazines. A Research Helper site shows some of the steps you will be taking. When writing your outline, look at the Perdu University OWL site The Writing Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (my alma mater) has a good website on Planning and Writing a Research Paper which includes information on writing the outline. Cornell University has a good tutorial of research tips.
Please get your Research Papers and your Presentation posted this week, especially as I will be posting all your presentations to this blog.

More chat...

Many of you entered the live chat space but did not leave a comment. I am linking here to the chat log Room 4 log.txt so you can see how that looks. Scroll up and down to Saturday, December 11 posts. Tomorrow, I would like you to go on the live chat space and leave a comment. I was able to connect with Sarah and Kristoffer today. Thank you for that really nice conversation but not everyone can come on at the same time. This is the reason I had to leave it open like this. This is more like a discussion but I want you to experience the Chat rooms.

"Live" Chat

For the "live" chat today, please go to Live Chat in your Communicate section and click on the icon. This will open the WebCT Chat window. Read the text posted in this window regarding the freedom of speech. Then click on Room 4 Intellectual Freedom. You will enter the "room". A dialog box opens called the Output Interaction Box. Here you will be able to read the ongoing discussion postings. To the right of the dialog box is a section: Users Logged on. You should see your name there and any other names of people logged on at the same time. However as this chat is recorded, you can go ahead and post statements and respond to others even if you are alone and cannot actually see much of the rest of the script. Write in the box titled Enter Your Message Below and press enter to send. I will post the log of the chat later for all to read and I will give credit to everyone who enters and writes some opinions on the subject. Don't worry if you cannot see anyone else in the room because I am allowing this chat to be asynchronous. I have tried each semester to have a synchronous chat but it seems impossible to get students together simultaneously. I will randomly check in and then will close the chat on Sunday after 8 PM and post the log on the blog.
